As more becomes known about Bipolar Disorder, its etiology, diagnosis, and treatment, the International Conference on Bipolar Disorder has emerged as an important vehicle for the dissemination of information on the subject.  Each of the previous conferences has seen an increasing number of researchers, academicians, and clinicians gather to discuss the latest advances in Bipolar Disorder research as presented by leading international experts.  The Eighth International Conference on Bipolar Disorder will present information on:
The conference will include workshops focusing on a variety of topics as well as an international advocacy forum.  As in the past, the conference will also feature "Ask the Experts" question and answer sessions, poster displays and "Rapid Communications" sessions.

The first two days of the meeting will include technical presentations geared toward academic researchers and clinicians, interactive “Ask the Experts” sessions, poster presentations and rapid communications sessions.  Poster sessions will involve visual, self-explanatory displays of new research results.  Rapid communications sessions will consist of brief (12 minute) presentations followed by three minutes of discussion.  At the conclusion of the first two days of the conference, posters will be exhibited in conjunction with a reception, giving authors the opportunity to discuss their findings with other participants.  In addition, there will be rapid communications sessions on Thursday and Friday.  The third day will contain workshops and the international advocacy forum.

Individuals or institutions interested in participating in the poster or rapid communications sessions are invited to submit abstracts summarizing the proposed content of the material to be presented.  The abstracts are to be published in the journal, "Bipolar Disorders",  Abstract Book for the Eighth International Conference on Bipolar Disorder.  We request that you submit your abstract preferably through the conference website at www.8thbipolar.org.  Please follow the abstract preparation guidelines and submit the requested materials no later than January 15, 2009.  No more than two abstracts per first author will be considered.

The program will be of considerable interest to a broad range of mental health professionals.  The breadth of the presentations should attract academic researchers, neuroscientists, pharmacologists, clinicians, and practitioners, in university settings as well as in private practice.  The aspect of maintenance treatment and psychotherapeutic methodology will also be of interest to psychologists, social workers, nurses and others.  Registration materials, including tuition rates, etc. will be available after November 1, 2008 or on the website www.8thbipolar.org.   This Call for Abstracts information and guidelines, as well as the abstract submission forms can also be found on this website.

We look forward to seeing you in June, 2009.  If you have any questions related to the abstract submission or the conference in general, please contact Maria Pena-Jordan at (412) 802-6917 or by e-mail:  penajordanmi@upmc.edu.
