Auditory cortex of the human STG. Panels A-E are from a single section (F) processed for Nissl substance: Core (A); Lateral Belt (B); Internal Parabelt (C); External Parabelt (D); Area Tpt (E). Locations of A-E are as in (F). Scale bar = 300 mm.

Summary of Features by Region

Core

Lateral Belt

Internal Parabelt

External Parabelt

Tpt

Small cells, densely packed in layers 2-4, with indistinct laminar borders. Broad layer 5 appears as clear stripe.

Less densely packed layers 2-4, with increased column spacing compared to core, and distinct laminar boundaries. Distinct 3c with large cells. Increased cell density of layer 5 relative to core.

Reduced cell density of layer 4 compared to lateral belt. Long columns of cells in layer 3, with columns often extending from layer 2-6.

Reduced cell density of layers 2 and 4 with increased column spacing compared to internal parabelt. Loss of regular alignment of pyramidal cells at border of layers 3 and 4.

More homogeneous cell density in layers 2-6 than in parabelt, though all layers discernable. Cells of lower layer 3 and upper layer 5 fuse with layer 4 to create a broad central band.
