Auditory cortex of the human STG. Panels A-E are from adjacent sections processed for immunocytochemistry for parvalbumin: Core (A); Lateral Belt (B); Internal Parabelt (C); External Parabelt (D); Area Tpt (E). Locations of A-E are as in Cytoarchitectonics Panel F. Scale bar = 300 mm.

Summary of Features by Region

Core

Lateral Belt

Internal Parabelt

External Parabelt

Tpt

Dense band of labeled terminals in lower layer 3 and layer 4, intense neuropil labeling of layers 2 through 4. Layer 6 band with intense labeling often present.

Reduced density of layer 3/4 band and less intense labeling of layers 2 and 3 compared to core. Separation of layer 6 band from layer 5 less distinct than in core.

Reduced layer 3/4 band compared to lateral belt. More uniform intensity of labeling in layers 5 and 6 than in lateral belt, further obscuring this border.

Reduced immunoreactivity in layers 2 through 4 compared to internal parabelt. Layer 6 immunoreactivity remains distinguishable.

Relatively uniform intensity of fiber labeling in layers 2-5, without a distinct band of terminal label. Loss of layer 6 band.
