Auditory cortex of the human STG. Panels are from a single section processed for acetylcholinesterase: Core (A); Lateral Belt (B); Internal Parabelt (C); External Parabelt (D); Area Tpt (E). Locations of A-E are as in Cytoarchitectonics Panel F. Scale bar = 300 mm.

Summary of Features by Region

Core

Lateral Belt

Internal Parabelt

External Parabelt

Tpt

Wide, dense band in lower layer 3 and layer 4. Sparse to absent layer 3c/4 cellular staining.

Narrower, less dense layer 3/4 band than in core. Distinct staining of layer 3c/4 cells.

Reduced fiber staining in all layers compared to lateral belt. Narrow columns of small cells in layers 3 and 4.

Slightly reduced fiber staining in layers 2-4, and less regularly organized columns of cells in lower layers 3 and 4, compared to internal parabelt.

Minimal fiber staining in all layers, without a central band. Widely spaced, irregularly arranged small stained cells.
