Research into the causes of Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, and Related Illnesses

Genetic Susceptibility in Schizophrenia

Funding for this work provided by the NIMH
ref. #R10 MH56242

Purpose:

The purpose of this study is to identify dopamine (DA) genes that may underlie liability to schizophrenia and related psychiatric disorders through analysis of a large sample of families with at least one member with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder. We will intensively analyze DA genes selected on the basis of a genome wide linkage analysis.  The goal of this analysis is to lead to greater understanding of genetic influences predisposing individuals to schizophrenia and related illnesses.

 Eligibility:

  • Families with at least one individual diagnosed with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder.
  • Both biological parents or another affected sibling must also participate.
  • Affected participants must be 6+ years old, unaffected must be 18+ years.

 Procedures:

Participants with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder will be asked to undergo the following procedures:

  • Blood Draw
  • Diagnostic Interview
  • Family Interview
  • Neurocognitive Tests

Family members will be asked to complete:

  • Blood Draw
  • Family Interview
  • Neurocognitive Tests

All procedures will be carried out by a qualified and experienced clinical interviewer.  All procedures can be done in the participant’s home or other convenient location.  In most cases, all procedures can be completed in one visit.

Payments:

All participants will be paid $50 upon completion of the study in appreciation for their time and contribution.

This is not a treatment study.  Thus, there will be no changes in treatment requested to participate in this study.  All information will be kept strictly confidential.
