Systematic Evaluation of Antiviral Medication in Schizophrenia (SEAMS)

To qualify you must meet the following criteria...

bullethave schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder
bulletbetween the ages of 18 and 50 years
bulletnot pregnant
bulletdo not have any serious medical conditions
bulletscreening to confirm eligibility

Eligible participants will be asked to complete the following...

bulletcomplete a clinical interview
bulletcomplete neuropsychological tests
bulletprovide a sample of blood
bulletbrain imaging
bullettake either antiviral medication or placebo for 16 weeks

Study Involving Relatives of Schizophrenia or Schizoaffective Patients

To qualify, you must meet the following criteria...

bulletbetween the ages of 10 and 50 years
bulletno history of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder
bulletno current problems with drugs or alcohol
bullethave a first-degree (parents, siblings) relative with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder
bulletcertain medical conditions and medications may disqualify one from participation

Eligible participants will be asked to complete the following...

bulletphysical, psychiatric, and neuropsychological examinations
bulletbrain imaging studies
bulletdiagnostic interview with the relative with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder

Investigating the Risk Factors for Bipolar Disorder

You may qualify if...

bulletyou have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder
bulletyou have a child between the ages of 10 and 20 years
bulletyou are willing to have your child undergo an MRI scan and some computer tests

Healthy Subjects for Comparison Studies

To qualify, you must meet the following criteria...

bulletbetween the ages of 10 and 50 years
bulletno prior history of psychiatric illness or problems with drugs or alcohol
bulletno first degree relatives (parents, siblings) with a history of psychotic or bipolar illness and no second degree relatives (grandparents, aunts, uncles, first cousins) with a psychotic disorder
bulletno current emotional or nervous problems

Eligible participants will be asked to complete the following...

bulletphysical, psychiatric, and neuropsychological examinations
bulletbrain imaging studies
