Andrea Poyastro Pinheiro, M.D., Ph.D., University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC

Andrea Poyastro Pinheiro, M.D., Ph.D., is a post-doctoral fellow at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, in the School of Medicine , Department of Psychiatry, Eating Disorders Program.  Dr. Pinheiro is a Brazilian psychiatrist who had been working clinically with an outpatient eating disorders team in Brazil since 1993.  In 2003 she received a Masters Degree in Epidemiology from the School of Medicine at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul – Brazil , and in 2007 she received her PhD from the Federal University of Sao Paulo – Paulista School of Medicine.  She started her PhD training in 2004, and came to US in 2005-2006 for a one and a half year of training at UNC under the supervision of Dr. Bulik and Dr. Sullivan to study the genetics of psychiatric disorders, with a special focus on eating disorders.  Her dissertation research focused on phenotypic refinement and use of endophenotypes, and its implications for psychiatric nosology and genetic analyses.  While at UNC, Dr. Pinheiro has been working on the Price Foundation dataset, mainly in phenotypic studies, in addition to upskilling her training in genetics, including bench work experience.  She is hoping to move forward and collaborate in the molecular genetics analysis of this sample.  She is also in the process of leading a consortium to develop a Hispano Latino American Eating Disorders Genetics Initiative to expand genetics research on eating disorders to Hispano Latino populations in the Americas , Portugal and Spain.  Dr. Pinheiro is a member of the Psychiatric Brazilian Association and the Academy of Eating Disorders .  In 2006 she was the recipient of the AED Young Investigator Travel Fellowship Award.
