Human 31P-1H
MRSI and MRI Brain Studies of Nicotine
This placebo-controlled study is intended to
examine the possible effects of nicotine to brain metabolism, and to
determine if the metabolic effects relate to the age of the subject.
A total of 120 subjects (60 smokers and 60 non-smokers) in three age
groups (14-20, 35-45, and 60-70 years of age) which include both males
and females will be recruited into this study. Each subject will
undergo two magnetic resonance (MR) procedures: One in which the
subject will be given a nicotine patch to deliver a specific dosage of
the drug to the subject, and the other in which the subject will be
given a placebo.
