DEPRESSION IS NOT A NORMAL PART OF BEING OLD.

Do you, or a loved one, suffer from depression? We now know that depression can be common in elders as well as younger adults. Late-life depression is a source of disablement in elders, and it is treatable.

Here are some common signs of depression in late life. Do any of these sound like you, or someone close to you?

  • Do you feel depressed, sad, or blue most of the day?
  • Do you find that you don’t enjoy things like you used to?
  • Have you lost your appetite, or lost weight without trying to?
  • Do you sleep too little or too much?
  • Do you feel tired or exhausted most of the time?
  • Do you feel restless, or sluggish?
  • Do you have trouble concentrating?
  • Do you think about dying?

Our center offers the following services at no charge for individuals over the age of 60 who may be suffering from depression: (click here if under age 60)

  • Evaluation and consultation
  • If eligible, participation in one of our research studies involving investigational medications and/or psychotherapy

If you would like help for yourself, or a loved one, please call our center at (412) 246-6006, between 9am and 4:30pm. Or, contact us via email: Maryann Schlernitzauer, MSN, study coordinator: schlernitzauerm@msx.upmc.edu
