COPE - EATING DISORDERS TREATMENT
The Center for Overcoming Problem Eating (COPE) and Eating Disorders
Clinic (EDC) at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic (WPIC),
directed by Dr. Walter Kaye, M.D. and Dr. Maria LaVia, M.D., specializes
in providing multi-level care for the treatment of eating disorders:
anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating, and other eating
problems.
Inpatient Treatment: COPE inpatient treatment consists
of a 11-bed inpatient unit, which is a highly structured environment
for the treatment of anorexia and bulimia. The program specializes
in cognitive-behavioral treatment. Patients participate in meals
and group therapy seven days per week, as well as working independently
on specific psychoeducational materials related to eating disorders,
coping skills, depression, emotion skills, and many other topics.
The unit is staffed by an interdisciplinary team of psychiatrists,
physicians, social workers, therapists, dietitians, nurses, and
other mental health specialists to provide an intensive but rewarding
treatment program. Inpatient treatment is typically for those
who are severely malnourished, requiring nutritional stabilization
or weight gain.
Day Treatment Program: The Outpatient Eating Disorders
Clinic at WPIC offers an intensive, five day per week program,
which includes structured meal sessions, medication management,
cognitive-behavioral treatment, skills training groups, process-oriented
groups, nutritional counseling, and health education. The day
treatment program serves as a step-up or step-down level of care,
ideal for post-inpatient treatment or as an intensive outpatient
treatment.
Evening Partial Hospitalization Program: This program
provides a combination of group therapy and structured meal sessions.
It is offered three evenings per week and requires a nine hour
per week commitment. Participants may move from this level of
care into more or less intensive levels of treatment, depending
upon their needs. Participants also have the opportunity to build
skills in the areas of meal planning, cooking, and relapse prevention.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy Group: Dialectical
behavior therapy has recently been found by our program to be
an effective treatment tool for some eating disorder patients,
particularly those who struggle with chronic and refractory problems.
This level of care involves one evening per week of an intensive
skills training group for 2 hours, and individual therapy for
1 hour per week. This level of care involves a one-year commitment.
Outpatient Treatment: Extensive outpatient services
are provided by WPIC for individuals who have anorexia nervosa,
bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder.
