How the newest antidepressants work in children and adolescents

Can you contribute to understanding?

Children and adolescents between the ages of 7 and 17 years and 11 months who are starting treatment or changing to treatment with Luvox (fluvoxamine) , Zoloft (sertraline), or Paxil (paroxetine) will be eligible for the study.

Course of Treatment

Children or adolescents eligible for the study will drink a can of caffeinated cola and a dose of cough syrup. Their urine will then be collected to determine the activity of certain liver enzymes. Following this patients will receive a single dose of medication and have blood levels measured. They will then stay on the same dose of medication for 2 weeks and return to the clinic for repeat blood levels. Patients, parents, research clinicians will be aware of which medication the patient is receiving. Treatment provided through the study is free of charge.
