Who is eligible to participate in CATS?

  • Children and adolescents between the ages of 9 - 14 who are experiencing problems with anxiety. 

Anxiety symptoms may include:

  • Excessive worry or fears about numerous events or activities

  • Difficulty controlling worry

  • Excessive concern about separation from home or important person(such as a parent)

  • Refusal to go to school or sleep alone because of fear of separation

  • Fear of social or performance situations (such as meeting new people, speaking in front of class, performing on stage)

  • Irritability, fatigue, trouble concentrating and/or trouble sleeping because of worry

  • Repeated complaints of physical symptoms such as headaches, stomachaches, nausea and vomiting due to worry

Some children may not qualify for the study.  Common exclusion criteria include, but are not limited to:

  • Currently taking psychiatric medications, except for stimulant medication for ADHD-inattentive type

  • A current pregnancy

  • Has metal objects or devices in the body such as dental braces, metal plates, or pacemakers.  Dental fillings are allowable.
