MTA

The MTA is the Multimodal Treatment of ADHD study. This is a large study being conducted at six sites in the United
States (including the University of Pittsburgh) and one site in Canada.

Five hundred seventy-nine 7-9 year old children with ADHD across these sites were randomly assigned to receive one
of four treatments for ADHD: Behavior Therapy, Medication Management, Behavior Therapy plus Medication Management,
or Community-provided treatment as usual and the study is now in a long-term follow-up phase.

This is the largest treatment trial ever conducted by the National Institute of Mental Health, and because of its size, there
has been considerable interest in following these children through adolescence to track their service utilization, mental
health, and general overall functioning.

As of the Fall 2009, fourteen year follow-up assessments are being conducted. Two years into the study 289 classmates, not
selected because of ADHD, were recruited for comparison purposes. They are also being followed to help evaluate the
functioning levels of the children diagnosed with ADHD.
