Welcome to PROMIS at the University of Pittsburgh

The Patient–Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS®), funded by the National Institutes of Health, aims to provide clinicians and researchers access to efficient, precise, valid, and responsive adult– and child–reported measures of health and well–being. The University of Pittsburgh has served as a PROMIS research site since 2004, successfully developing item banks for emotional distress (e.g., anger, anxiety, depression) and sleep-wake function (and associated sub-domains). Current projects include validation of developed item banks and development of new item banks for assessing alcohol and other substance use, and themes related to the utilization of Complimentary and Alternative Medicine (e.g., spirituality, locus of control, patient-provider characteristics).

More information about PROMIS can be found at: http://www.nihpromis.org

PROMIS measures can be implemented through static hard-copy questionnaires or in a web-based Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT) environment.  CAT offers the advantage of using Item Response Theory (IRT) and real-time algorithms to streamline the data collection process, allowing for an accurate assessment of constructs in as few as 4-5 items.  PROMIS instruments are available through the Assessment Center web site: http://www.assessmentcenter.net/
