Fatty Acid Supplementation Trials in Schizophrenia

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in fish and fish oils, are essential for normal functioning of the body. Specifically, they are important components in the cell membranes throughout the body, in particular, those of the eye and brain.

Past Research

In the past several years, scientists have found that there are decreases in omega-3 fatty acids in certain cells in patients with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorders.  It is believed that reduction in membrane omega-3 fatty acids can disrupt the proper functioning of cells, including brain cells.  These research findings led to the idea of using omega-3 fatty acids to supplement the antipsychotic drugs in order to improve the clinical situation.   A few studies have been conducted testing whether omega-3 fatty acids can be helpful to reduce symptoms.  Most, but not all, the studies show that omega-3 fatty acids can be helpful in reducing some of the symptoms associated with schizophrenia.  It may interest you to know omega-3 fatty acids are also helpful in other medical conditions, particularly in reducing the risk of heart disease.

FASTS Research

In this research study, called Fatty Acid Supplementation Trial in Schizophrenia, we want to understand if 6 months of omega-3 fatty acids supplementation improve the signs and symptoms of schizophrenia.  This research may lead to better treatments for schizophrenia.

Benefits to Participants

  • This is a supplementation trial; you will not have to change any of your current medication.

  • Participants will be seen regularly by a physician during the study.

  • All clinical assessments, brain scans and research medication will be provided at no cost.

  • Participants will be reimbursed for travel costs.
