Facial Recognition Intervention Therapy Study

Dr. Suzy Scherf, PhD, Carnegie Mellon University

Pennsylvania Department of Health

Children with autism often have difficulty remembering people by their face as well as feel uncomfortable and anxious when looking at people's faces.  The goal of this project is to help adolescents with autism spectrum disorders, between the ages of 10 and 15, improve their ability to remember and recognize faces without making them uncomfortable or anxious.

This study involves several visits over the course of a year using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), cognitive testing and visual training on a computer.   Randomly selected individual entered into the intervention portion of this program will be given a laptop computer to take home with them and complete intervention training.  This will involve training your child to recognize a group of objects they have never seen before, called Greebles, over several weeks.

If your child is not assigned to the intervention group and our results suggest  the intervention was helpful, we will make the training software available to all who are interested.
