Length: 2 Hours
Course Code: A017

Presenters:

Ellen Frank, PhD
Professor of Psychiatry and Psychology
University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine
Director, Depression and Manic Depression Prevention Program

Program Description:

Interpersonal and social rhythm therapy (IPSRT) is an empirically supported psychotherapeutic approach to the treatment of bipolar disorder. This program will present the innovative approach to the management of bipolar disorder, developed by Dr. Frank and colleagues at the University of Pittsburgh, which has shown to be effective in preventing relapse of mania and depression and in treating acute episodes of bipolar depression. This method combines a behavioral approach to increasing the regularity of daily routines (social rhythms) with an interpersonal approach to coping with the stresses of bipolar illness itself, with interpersonal life stress and with social role problems.

Educational Objectives:

At the conclusion of the program, participants should be able to:

  1. Explain the principles of interpersonal and social rhythm therapy

  2. Provide patients suffering from bipolar disorder with a rationale and set of strategies for improving their social
    rhythm stability

Target Audience:

All clinical and research professionals, students, and trainees as well as interested family members and individuals with mental illness.
