Program Description:

The mental health procedures act of 1976 is the legal basis for all voluntary and involuntary psychiatric admissions in the state of Pennsylvania.  This program will discuss the forms of voluntary and involuntary admission and outpatient commitments, as well as how the act applies to special populations such as mentally ill arrestees and prisoners.

The second part of this afternoon’s training will include review assessing suicide risk. The timely identification of individuals who may harm themselves, or complete a suicide is of primary importance to clinicians.  Despite greater awareness of the characteristics of high risk individuals, it remains extremely difficult to predict when an individual is likely to carry out violent or self-destructive behavior.  This program will review available data and provide an outline of what is needed for a complete risk assessment; how to gather it and develop an understanding of risk factors.

Educational Objectives:

At the conclusion of this program participants should be able to:

1.                   Distinguish between involuntary commitment and treatment over objection

2.                   Identify the four criteria for involuntary commitments

3.                   Describe the process by which the involuntary emergency examination (302) may be extended

4.                   Complete a risk assessment using the Sad Persons Scale model.

5.                   Define the limitations of the No Suicide contract as it relates to lethality assessment and management.

Target Audience:

All clinical and research professionals, students, trainees, as well as interested family members and consumers.
