Program Description:

Smoking is common among individuals with substance use, gambling and psychiatric disorders. The multiple negative health effects from tobacco use make it important for clinicians to identify tobacco users, provide pharmacological interventions to treat nicotine dependence and provide motivational interventions to encourage cessation.

Educational Objectives:

At the conclusion of this program participants should be able to:

  1. Identify and  define nicotine dependence as a chronic addictive disorder
  2. Discuss the relationship between nicotine dependence substance abuse, gambling and psychiatric disorders
  3. Explore a social marketing methodology for approaching  smoking cessation in a  clinical setting
  4. Identify brief intervention and coaching techniques for use with nicotine dependent individuals
  5. Review current smoking cessation and nicotine replacement therapies, interaction with other medications and recommendation for dosing and usage recommendations
  6. Identify community resources and support for smoking cessation and ongoing recovery.

Target Audience:

This program is directed toward clinicians and other professionals from both the mental health and substance abuse treatment fields who work with individuals with co-occurring disorders.

The Office of Education and Regional Programming, Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic is certified by the Pennsylvania Certification Board (PCB) to provide Certified Addiction Counselor (CAC) and Certified Co-Occurring Disorders Professional (CCDP) continuing education credits.

Nurses and other health care professionals are awarded the designated number of Continuing Education Units (CEU).  One CEU is equal to 10 contact hours.

The indicated number of clock hours are approved by the Department of Public Welfare Bureau of Adult Residential Licensing.  These clock hours may count towards the 24 hours of annual training for administrators required in 55 Pa. Code Chapter 2600 (relating to personal care homes).

Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic is approved by the American Psychological Association to offer continuing education for psychologists.  Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic maintains responsibility for these programs and their content.

The announced credit hours for each program can be applied to your training hours for the Certified Psychiatric Rehabilitation Practitioners (CPRP).

Via the PA Turnpike and Interstate 376: Take exit 57, Pittsburgh/Monroeville, to Interstate 376 West.  Follow the interstate to Exit 3B, Oakland (Bates Street).  Follow Bates Street to the second stoplight; turn left onto Atwood Street.  Follow Atwood to the next stoplight at Forbes Avenue; turn right onto Forbes and immediately get into the far left lane.  Take a left onto Oakland Avenue at the next stoplight.  At the next light, go straight.  Oakland Avenue will immediately become Desoto Street.  Drive up the hill to the stoplight and take a right turn at the light onto O’Hara Street.  WPIC is the first building on the left.  There is a parking garage next door that is open for public use.

Via Interstates 79/279 from the North: Take Interstate 79 south to Interstate 279 south (two miles south of Wexford/Route 910).  Near downtown, take exit 8A to Interstate 579, and follow signs to Interstate 376 east via the Boulevard of the Allies.  Take Forbes Avenue/Oakland exit left; do not continue on Interstate 376 east.  Bear right onto the Forbes Avenue access ramp, and follow Forbes to Oakland Avenue; turn left onto Oakland Avenue.  At the next light, go straight.  Oakland Avenue will immediately become Desoto Street.  Drive up the hill to the stoplight and take a right turn at the light onto O’Hara Street.  WPIC is the first building on the left.  There is a parking garage next door that is open for public use.
