Gretchen L. Haas, Ph.D. Associate Professor of Psychiatry University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic Director, NIMH Fellowship in Mental Health Research Gretchen Haas, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry, Director of the NIMH Undergraduate Fellowship Program in Mental Health Research, Director of the Family and Psychosocial Studies Program at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and Co-Director of the Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Center (MIRECC) of the regional VISN 4 (Veterans Administration Integrated Services Network). She received her B.A. in Psychology from Cornell University and her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. After completing clinical internships in child pediatric psychology and adult clinical psychology, she completed post-doctoral training in psychotherapy at the Postgraduate Center for Mental health in New York City. In 1987 she was awarded funding by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) to conduct a pioneering longitudinal study of sex differences in first-episode and chronic schizophrenia. After moving to the University of Pittsburgh in 1990 Dr. Haas joined the faculty of the Center for Neurosciences of Mental Disorders Schizophrenia (CNMDS) where she has pursued investigations of the premorbid phase of schizophrenia, including examination of early social developmental predictors of neurocognitive deficits in schizophrenia. In her early years at the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Haas was also instrumental in the founding of the NIMH-funded Center for Research on Suicidal Behavior, now located at Columbia University. She is also President of the Pittsburgh Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). Her research on suicidal behavior in schizophrenia has focused on the clinical and psychosocial correlates of suicidal ideation and attempts over the course of the illness. Dr. Haas is currently leading a task force in the VA Network 4 on the development of clinical guidelines and procedures for the assessment of suicidal behavior in primary care and behavioral health settings.
