Psychology Internship Program
Offer and Acceptance Policy

Thank you for your interest in the Psychology Internship Program at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic (WPIC). Enclosed is our brochure describing both the Program and WPIC.

The Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC) has developed a uniform application for psychology internship that we use at WPIC. This comprehensive application was designed to meet the needs of internships in the U.S. and Canada and to minimize work for applicants who typically apply to numerous programs. The application can be accessed and completed by computer. You can obtain a copy at the APPIC Web site: http://www.appic.org/

Internship programs have been requested not to alter the application document but rather to ask applicants for any additional information required. Our program emphasizes training for clinical psychologists who have strong research backgrounds and who are interested in academic careers. Accordingly, we request that applicants submit a curriculum vitae that describes research experience (research assistant/associate experience, familiarity and experience with research assessments, experience on federally funded projects) and research productivity (publications and presentations). We ask that you forward six copies of the completed application form, six copies of your research CV, three or more letters of support, and one validated graduate school transcript. Please indicate clearly (in a cover letter) the address where you prefer to receive mail and the telephone number at which you prefer to receive phone calls.

In processing applications, we use a two-step procedure. First, written applications are screened, and students who appear best suited for our program are invited to visit. During the visit, applicants are interviewed by members of the faculty, tour our facilities, and have the opportunity to speak with current interns. Second, we offer positions to students from the pool of those who are interviewed.

This year the deadline for applications is November 1, 2007. Please note that we accept applications only from students in APA-approved Ph.D. programs in clinical psychology. Interview visits will be scheduled for January 11 and 18, 2008, and the results of the computer match will be released on February  25, 2008.

We observe all APPIC guidelines in our intern recruitment process. APPIC has strengthened its position regarding sharing of information about ranking of candidates and sites, and we endorse the current position--that is, as members of APPIC, we understand and accept the policy that neither we, nor any member at our training facility (including current interns and fellows), will solicit, accept, or use any ranking-related information from any intern applicant prior to uniform notification day.

Best wishes for success in making a satisfying internship match.
