Linda Gochfield, MD
Clinical Professor of Psychiatry,
University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey,
Robert Wood Johnson Medical School

I have been in community mental health for over twenty years, always on the front lines treating patients with serious mental illness, with a special interest in work with families and rehabilitation programs. I teach residents and medical students in this setting, and train staff in psychotherapy models for all elements of the CMHC population. I have been active in the New Jersey Psychiatric Association for many years, serving as President in 1995-6, and I continue to chair its Public Psychiatry Committee, addressing our state's planning for Medicaid Managed Care and the closing of a state hospital.

After four years as AACP's Area 3 Representative, I became Vice President in 1996, chairing the Membership Committee in our successful campaign to increase membership and enhance member involvement in AACP: we canvassed members by questionnaire, had a very successful exhibit booth at the May APA Meeting, and recruited many members or our enlarged and active committees. On the board, I support diversity by speaking for the "Venus People" who are shy or female. I see AACP as a wonderful forum for expression and growth for community psychiatrists, giving us an avenue for effective action to build a healthy community for both ourselves and our patients.
