Skills Training Modules From
UCLA Clinical Research Center

An expanded array of modules in the UCLA Social and Independent Living Skills Program, for training persons with serious and disabling mental disorders, are now available for use in community mental health, psychosocial rehabilitation, hospital and private office practices. Modules are professionally available to train Medication Self Management, Symptom Self Management, Recreation for Leisure, and Basic Conversation Skills. Produced, field-tested and validated by Dr. Robert Liberman and his UCLA Clinical Research Center for Schizophrenia & Psychiatric Rehabilitation, they are in active use in myriad facilities throughout the USA. The modules are the keystone of the Community & Rehabilitative Psychiatry Section at the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center, directed by Jerome V. Vaccaro, MD.

Each module is comprised of skill areas, and the specific behavioral-educational objectives are taught within each skill area using a structured set of seven learning activities that are designed to overcome the cognitive deficits and symptomatic impairments of persons with schizophrenia and other major mental disorders. For example, in the Skill Area “Identifying Warning Signs of Relapse” in the Symptom Management Module, patients are taught how to interact with physicians, relatives and other mental health care providers to specify their prodromal signs and experiences and to develop and monitor a Warning Signs Record Sheet. Each module includes a step-by-step Trainer’s Manual, a Patients’ Workbooks with exercises and assignments, a Videocassette used in the training sessions to demonstrate skills, and a User’s Guide.

The modules have been empirically validated in several controlled studies and field tests, most recently reported in the May and November 1992 issues of the American Journal of Psychiatry. The above four models can be ordered by contacting: Dissemination Coordinator, Camarillo-UCLA Research Center, P0 Box 6022, Camarillo, CA 93011-6022, (805) 484-5663 or 484-5607.

The new module, Job Finding, can be ordered from Dr. Harvey Jacobs, Moss Rehabilitation Hospital, 1200 W. Tabor Road, Philadelphia, PA 19141 (215-456-9561). New modules in development during 1993 are Community Re-Entry, Grooming & Self-Care, and Social Problem Solving.
