Journey to Recovery Come join us in Virginia
this February for the AACP Community Mental Health Winter meeting! All persons
interested in Community and Public Mental Health are welcome to attend. The
theme of the meeting, Community Mental Health and the Journey to Recovery,
was chosen in order to explore and promote contemporary thinking about the
recovery philosophy as it applies to mental health services. The reference to journey,
in addition to incorporation of the idea that recovery is itself a journey, also
is designed to promote the 200th
anniversary of the outset of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. This expedition has
a close relationship with Charlottesville. Meriwether Lewis is from the
Charlottesville area as was the Clark family. Thomas Jefferson, another
prominent Charlottesvillian, commissioned the expedition during his term as the
third President of the United States. Tours of Montecello and The University of
Virginia grounds, both of which were designed by "TJ", will be
available. James Madison, also a local resident with a home that can be toured,
was the Secretary of State during this era. The medical advisor to the
expedition was Benjamin Rush, a prominent physician known to many psychiatrists
as supporting the moral treatment of persons with mental illness. We hope to be
accompanied by one or more of these historical characters at the meeting. There
will be scientific presentations highlighting contemporary community mental
health services. We are in the process of applying for up to twelve hours of CME
credit for attendance at this meeting. We hope to have an update presentation
from the National Freedom Commission on Mental Health set up by President Bush.
The meeting will be held February 7 and 8 at the Charlottesville Omni Hotel. For
more information or a full brochure, please contact Anita
Everett or Heather Glissman at 804-692-0276. Back to Summer 2002 Table Of Contents
