Black and Blue: Depression in the African-American Community
is an educational videotape that addresses the
unique concerns of African Americans. It features African Americans who have
experienced depression, health professionals, and a minister. Produced and
directed by Annelle Primm, M.D., there are two versions available - 9 and 16
minutes. There are also looped versions of the 16 and 9 minute videos. The
videotape provides information on symptoms and treatment of depression,
emphasizes the importance of early recognition and treatment, and increases
awareness of the negative consequences of untreated depression. Black and
Blue addresses cultural beliefs by presenting messages about depression
being a medical illness, spirituality being a component of healing for
depression, but not a replacement for professional treatment, and the usefulness
of antidepressant medications. The videotape also provides information about
