Invites Psychiatrists and Other Physicians to Attend

"Buprenorphine in Office-Based

Treatment of Opiate Dependence"

A Training Course of the APA Institute

on Psychiatric Services

October 13, 2001

Renaissance Orlando Resort, Orlando, FL

A new law, passed in late 2000, permits physicians to directly provide care to opioid dependent patients. Physicians who complete an eight-hour training course will soon be able to address the detoxification and withdrawal needs of opioid dependent patients in their own offices. You will be able to provide compassionate treatment for detoxification or maintenance to up to 30 patients, but you can only use a schedule III, IV, or V drug specifically approved by the FDA for the treatment of opioid dependence.

Physician Training for Use of Buprenorphine

Two drugs - buprenorphine and buprenorphine/naloxone (also known as buprenorphine combo) - are currently under the FDA’s consideration; the approval process is not yet complete, but approval is expected within a few months. Buprenorphine is the only drug that will meet the requirements of the new law in the near future. It promises to be an excellent tool for psychiatrists, physicians of other specialties, and addiction specialists.

Get a Waiver for Your Patient’s Sake

Those physicians who seek a waiver from the Controlled Substances Act prohibition against using scheduled drugs for the treatment of opioid dependence must hold an addiction certification from specified professional medical organizations, be associated with the clinical research trials of buprenorphine, or must complete at least eight hours of approved training in the treatment and management of opioid dependent patients.

NOTE: The course addresses all the required areas for physician training identified in the new law. This training meets the requirements for the Controlled Substance Act waiver.
