AMSA Develops Psychiatry Interest Group, Seeking Additional Interface with Community Psychiatrists

The American Medical Student Association (AMSA) is pleased to announce several exciting psychiatry related opportunities this year. AMSA’s Psychiatry Interest Group was approved this fall. The purpose of the Psychiatry Group is to increase medical student interest and awareness in the field of psychiatry. Since its approval the group has established a web site and an email list-serve. The web site provides information regarding careers in psychiatry, residency programs, summer opportunities, fellowships, electives, and online resources. It also has links to the major psychiatric organizations (including the AACP). The web site can be viewed at www.amsa.org (section on Standing Committees, Interest Groups). The first Interest Group meeting will be held on March 29th, 11-11:50 A.M. at AMSA’s 51st annual convention (March 28 - April 1) in Anaheim, California. AMSA is pleased to announce their guest speaker Hans Steiner, M.D. on March 31st, 11:30-12:20 P.M of the conference. Dr. Steiner is Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Stanford School of Medicine. His areas of expertise include the psychopathologies associated with aggression, trauma and victimization as well as the overlap between pediatric and psychiatric diseases. If you have any questions or suggestions for the Interest Group, or if you know of summer jobs or programs that may be of interest to medical students, please contact Jennifer Rosen at jrosen03@epo.som.sunysb.edu or (631) 473-8582.
