APIRE/Janssen Public Policy Leadership ProgramThe first group of Fellows was selected for the 1999-2000 year and will remain in the program through 2001, joining the six new fellows who will be selected this summer. This year's Fellows include: Tanya Anderson, MD (Chicago, Illinois); Donna Chen, MD, MHP (Charlotesville, Virginia); Molly Finnerty, MD (New York, New York); Abdullah Hasan, MD (New York, New York); Erik Roskes, MD (Baltimore, Maryland); and Edward Simmer, MD (Suffolk, Virginia). Each year a cohort of early career psychiatrists will be selected to enter this two-year program, for a total of twelve participants at any one time. These fellows will attend the APA Institute on Psychiatric Services (IPS) where they will participate in a series of special programs on public policy formulation and public administration. During the program, participants will network with leaders in mental health policy and administration in public sector psychiatry, learn about innovative programs and the leadership of those programs, receive training in public policy as it relates to mental health services, and learn more about mental health services research. Through the AACP and the APA, each Fellow is assigned a senior psychiatrist mentor active in public mental health policy formulation. The mentors will serve as guides at the IPS meeting, introduce Fellows to colleagues, discuss their plans for leadership in public psychiatry, and assist the Fellows in visits to local innovative programs. The mentors for the 1999-2000 Fellows are all AACP members and include: Lisa Bailey, MD (Medford, Oregon); Robert Goisman, MD (Boston, Massachusetts); Steve Goldfinger, MD (Brooklyn, New York); John Haggertty, MD (Chapel Hill, North Carolina); Annelle Primm, MD (Baltimore, Maryland); and Ken Thompson, MD (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania). Candidates for the program must have completed their formal training within the past five years, and must have shown promise in leadership in public administration and/or public policy formulation. Participants must also be members of the American Psychiatric Association and residents of the United States or Canada. The deadline for application for next year's Program is July 31, 2000.
