Agenda Items

  1. Discussion of the finalized AACP Guidelines for the Development and Evaluation of Public/Community Psychiatry Fellowship Programs

  3. Discussion of the rationale, development and implementation of an AACP-sponsored certification in Public/Community Psychiatry led by Tony Carino, MD

Actions

  1. AACP “Guidelines” now posted on the AACP website and members will alert colleagues whenever possible to the availability of this document
  2. With regard to proposed certification process, rationale discussed centered around issues of establishing professional identity, encouraging residents to pursue post-residency training through formal community/public psychiatry Fellowship training programs in community/public psychiatry, providing a pathway for persons practicing public sector psychiatry to obtain a professional certification in the subspecialty. The discussion clarified that the process is intended to provide a mechanism for individuals, but not programs, to be certified.
  3. Tasks currently completed consist of the establishment of a small work group that is identifying knowledge/competency domains (drawn largely from the AACP Guidelines document) and compiling an initial list of literature sources attached to these competency domains.  Much of the group work will continue to be done through the wiki site developed and coordinated by Tony Carino, MD: http://aacpcertification.wikispaces.com
  4. Short term tasks to be completed prior to next meeting consist of identifying AACP Topic Experts in the field who can contribute to specific knowledge/competency domains (e.g., Engagement and Recovery Focused care, Evaluation Methods and System Analysis, Program development, etc.) and help formulate study materials, exam questions, etc.  Tony Carino, MD, will be emailing a template for AACP members and others to nominate particular “Experts” in the respective fields.

  1. Begin the identification of prerequisites needed to sit for the certification examination for both those who complete a Fellowship program as well as those who pursue certification through clinical/professional experience.
  2.  Begin forming lines of communication with consumer-oriented organizations (e.g., NAMI, MHA, etc.) in order to gather input as we develop the certification process.
