Abstract
The National Institute of Mental Health has enjoyed an 80% increase in its budget over the past five years.  This increase will not continue beyond FY2003.  To prosper over the next few years, NIMH will need to set clear priorities, identifying specific objectives.  During the recent period of budget growth, bipolar disorder has been conspicuously under-represented in the Institute's portfolio.  To increase research funding in this area during the current budget plateau, the field will need fundamental discoveries, innovate approaches, and evidence of a public health impact.  Behavioral neuroscience, with recent discoveries about the regulation of rhythms and mood, may yield some opportunities for translational research.
