SEARCH FOR TREATMENTS IN EARLY PSYCHOSIS (STEP)

May 30, 2008

Introduction:

Cognitive impairments are a core feature of schizophrenia that are present before onset and throughout the course of the illness, causing significant functional debilitation. The 5th Biennial Search for Treatments in Early Psychosis (STEP) Symposium will bring together international experts in the psychology, neurobiology, and treatment of cognition in schizophrenia.  State-of-the-art information regarding the nature, pathophysiology, and treatment of cognitive impairments in schizophrenia will be discussed, with a focus on early illness manifestations, as well as ongoing research on novel therapeutics for cognitive remediation.

Who Should Attend:

The target audience includes psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and other mental health

professionals; medical students, residents and other trainees; as well as mental health consumers

and their families.

Educational Objectives:

At the conclusion of the program, participants should be able to:

  • Recognize the importance of cognitive impairments in schizophrenia and their early manifestation in the course of the illness.

  • Explain current thinking about the pathophysiological basis of cognitive impairments.

  • Describe current treatment approaches to cognitive impairments in schizophrenia and principles guiding novel therapeutic development for cognitive remediation in the illness.
