Suicide Risk: Comprehensive Assessment and Clinical Management

Program Description:

This presentation is part of a mandatory clinical training focusing on the assessment of lethality in clinical populations. This program is a requirement for all clinical professional staff and faculty.

Dr. Brent will review the descriptive epidemiology and risk factors for suicide and suicidal behavior across the lifespan. This comprehensive overview will discuss the assessment of suicidal risk using proximal and distal risk factors domains common to all diagnostic conditions and ages, and will review the current best practice studies on the treatment and appropriate clinical management of suicidal risk.

 

Educational Objectives:

 

At the conclusion of the program, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the epidemiology and risk factors for suicide across the lifespan and across disorders;

  2. Recognize risk factors in assessing suicidal risk;

  3. Recommend the best practice in the management and treatment of patients who are suicidal or at high suicidal risk

The lecture can be viewed by clicking on the following links. All three parts must be viewed in their entirety. You must complete each part once you begin viewing it. You will be required to start at the beginning of each segment if you stop in the middle of a segment. You do not have to complete all three parts in one sitting but they must be completed in order. Part I is 50 minutes in length; Part II is 25 minutes and Part III is 30 minutes.

It may be helpful to print the PowerPoint slides before starting the video(s). There are 97 slides which you may prefer to save and print in outline format.

After viewing the streaming video, print and complete the Test Document and the Credit Application/Validation Statement. In order to satisfy this training requirement, you must score 80% of better on the test. Please complete these documents, and forward them via fax or mail to:

When we have received your information and verified that you have achieved a passing score on the test, we will send out the appropriate professional continuing education credits. If you do not require or do not select either CAC, Social Work or CPRP credits, you will receive general continuing education credits. If you do not achieve the 80% required, you will be contacted directly.

Continuing Education Credit

Each program is offered for the designated number of continuing education credits

 

CERTIFIED ADDICTION COUNSELORS: CAC

Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, Office of Education and Regional Programming is certified by the Pennsylvania Chemical Abuse Certification Board (PCACB) to provide Certified Addiction Counselor (CAC) continuing education credits for those participants attending the entire program. 

CERTIFIED PSYCHIATRIC REHABILITATION PRACTITIONERS:  CPRP

The 2.5 credit hours for this program can be applied to your training hours for the Certified Psychiatric Rehabilitation Practitioners (CPRP).

 

MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS: CEU

Nurses and other health care professionals are awarded the designated number of Continuing Education Units (CEU).  One CEU is equal to 10 contact hours.

 

SOCIAL WORKERS

 

2.5 hours of continuing education is provided through co-sponsorship of the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work, a PA-approved provider of social work continuing education for this program.
