Wesley Sowers is currently the Medical Director for the Office of Behavioral Health in the Department of Human Services of Allegheny County.  He is also Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Dr. Sowers has served on the Board of Directors of the American Association of Community Psychiatrists since 1988, first as the APA Mead Johnson resident representative and as editor of Community Psychiatrist, the quarterly newsletter of the AACP from 1990-2000. He is also a member of the American Society of Addiction Medicine, the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatrists,  the American Public Health Association, American Orthopsychiatry Association, and the Executive Committee of the American Association of Psychiatric Administrators.

 

He is a member of the Addiction Re-certification Examination Committee for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and serves as Addiction Section Editor for the Community Mental Health Journal. He has been a member of the National Substance Abuse Advisory Group for the National Council for Community Behavioral Health Care and on the Physician Consortium on Substance Abuse Education for the Department of Health and Human Services.

Dr. Sowers has extensive experience in the provision of treatment and services to special populations such as homeless men, incarcerated offenders, substance users, and the hearing impaired. He has also served abroad as Medical Director for organizations in El Salvador and Sudan.

Dr. Sowers is a graduate of the Northwestern University Medical School. He completed residencies at the Cook County Hospital and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry.
