NAMI Honors Goldfinger

Long time Board member Stephen M. Goldfinger was the recipient of the First Annual National Alliance for the Mentally Ill's Excellence in Community Psychiatry Award. Steve is Professor and Vice Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at the State University of New York Health Science Center Brooklyn. He received the award at this year's annual NAMI convention in Chicago.

The Excellence in Community Science Award "recognizes outstanding efforts by professionals who reach out to consumers and their communities". At the award ceremony, NAMI noted that "Dr. Goldfinger has demonstrated a commitment to his patients that is truly heroic. He has consistently provided services to those who need the most, reaching out to the streets; his gifts of knowledge, expertise and caring have filled many lives with new dignity and hope." Dr. Goldfinger was also thanked for being "on call" every year for the last decade for NAMI convention attendees who require on-site psychiatric services. (He was joined this year by AACP secretary Ben Crocker, in both presentations and coverage at the meeting.

Other individuals who were recognized at the award ceremony include Stephen Hyman, the Director of the National Institute of Mental Health; Geraldo Rivera, NBC news reporter; John Nash, winner of the 1994 Nobel Prize in Economics; Michael Weinrip author of the New York Times Sunday Magazine cover story expose of NY mental health services, which was cited by the President at the recent the White House Conference on Mental Health.
